10:58 am - The wild and the free

baxil
I'm a few hours late on the update, but I hope everyone enjoyed International Pixel-Stained Technopeasant Wretch Day!

April 23 is a day dedicated to posting free fiction (or other artistic content) on the Internet -- the backlash to a disparaging comment the then-VP of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association made about people who post their work for free online. A little history behind that controversy is here, along with discussion of why giving your work away online can be a Good Thing, even if your goal is to be paid for it and support a world where authors can be paid well for their creativity.

According to Wikipedia, April 23 is also World Book and Copyright Day, which is a neat piece of synchronicity, if perhaps also a source of unintentional irony.

Elsewhere on Livejournal, ipstp collects links from people who are releasing free material in honor of the day. My own modest contribution is episode #53 of my serialized fantasy novel "Legend of Hero," which you can also read from the beginning.

(April 22, of course, was Earth Day: hence the post icon. I didn't get a chance to do anything special for it this year, but I'm glad it's gotten such popular traction.)

12:29 pm - Today was the Day!

evilgrins
Today is the day I visited Mom to get the tree. It is my purpose in life, it why she had me to begin with...

...to get the tree...

...and things off the top shelf.

No one is as good a me when it comes to getting the tree. I am the Tree Finding God. There are many who think they are good at this but they pale in comparison. I've been doing this since Dad used to takle me to those "cut your own one down" lots were still active in Half Moon Bay; so fun to find then saw it down. I have perfected my craft to such a degree as to be worthy of the "Find Your Own Tree & Take It Home Olympics"...

...I just keep waiting for them to create the event and send me an invite.

Bow down to my find the tree mad skillz!

1:22 pm - Calling In Gay

evilgrins
oh the weather outside was frightful9:07 PM 12/9/08 · So, this Wednesday is sorta National Gay Day...excepting that it largely only pertains to California so far as I've heard. The concept is in response to the passing of Proposition 8 and the basic idea is for everyone that is homosexual to call in sick.

In this particular case 'sick' is being replaced by 'gay'...which casts an allusion I personally don't think is necessarily positive but whatever.

Concept of this, despite my tagging this as being a holiday it's more of a protest sorta deal, is to show the American public how essential gays are to the work force. Actually it's part of this that may cause an issue given that the economy being in the crappy state it is, several gays that have been interviewed say they'll be unable to call in gay because they can't afford to.

They'll be supporting this movement in other ways.

While I don't have a full handle on this, clearly, I'm calling in gay too. Granted, I'm not gay and I'm currently unemployed but it's the thought that counts.

3:09 pm - halloween music cd
halloweengirl37 If anyone else is currently searching for some haunting and chilling Halloween music, Abandoned Toys has a really beautiful and dark music cd called, "The witch's garden". Its melancholic and mysterious, full of really creepy sounds, but still has beautiful, modern classical sounding arrangements that make the disc listenable for the rest of the year as well. If anyone has some other cd recommendations, I'd love to hear them as well.

7:21 am - Happy Father's Day

evilgrins
10:00 PM 6/12/08 · There's is an added special benefit to when certain friends' birthdays coincide with actual holidays or special events. For example, Sunday being Father's Day, on their special day you can instead wish them a Happy whatever the day in question is. In a lot of cases this is perfectly okay and taken quite well...

...although someone that is, say, female, might not take to it as well.

Being wished a Happy Father's Day, I mean.

Still, that should not let that deter you.

Of course...you do run the risk of receiving blood vengeanceCollapse )

8:56 am - it's just about that time again

evilgrins
Every year, come my birthday or XMAS, I respecfully ask both parents to get me very little or nothing. Not that I'm opposed to gifts but I just don't have much of anywhere to put anything anymore. Dad is very resistant to this and not only buys me stuff but gets the oddest assortment of wonkiness...his gifts almost scare me. So, this year (blood vengeance) I'll be shopping for his gift out of here: Clicky...

...which may not seem bad but trust me, it'll drive him nuts.

I'm a big fan of family holidays and am usually quite festive with them. Which differs slightly from KevinniveK's philosophy. He's not in favor of Father's Day, or Mother's Day really, as he doesn't see why he should treat them better on one particular day as opposed to all the others. Granted, he treats his parents better than almost anybody I can think of so I suppose if he did put in an effort on their respective special days...he'd keel over dead.

How're you planning on spending Father's Day?
